Heaven and Earth Designs Kit Review

Hello everyone!

Last month the post delivered what I'd been anxiously waiting for. My Heaven and Earth Designs kit! This kit was a birthday gift from my husband to go along with a chart I was lovingly RAKed by Amy from the Heaven and Earth Designs Facebook group.

What all comes in a Heaven and Earth Designs kit? Is it worth the cost and wait time? Let's take a closer look.

Before I go into price comparisons and further details let's look at the photos from my kit opening.

The chart the kit is for. Chart is sold separately.

The presentation box next to my laptop for size comparison.
The top of the presentation box.

Inside the box
Beautifully organized DMC floss.
28ct lugana wrapped in adorable acid free tissue paper and lots of love.

Notions bag with needle case, needle, and beautiful handmade glass needle threader.

Once you have your chart and kit from Heaven and Earth Designs you're ready to start stitching, or gridding if you choose to grid your projects. Everything fits perfectly in the presentation box so you have a place to store your WIP once you've started.

You can order a kit with various counts and types of fabric, or order the kit without fabric if you already have fabric in your stash. No guessing if your fabric is large enough, or if you have the right amount of floss in the same dye lot.

Now for the question I've been asked most. Is ordering a kit from Heaven and Earth Designs worth the time and money? First, we'll take a look at cost. I have pulled my prices from 123 Stitch with exception of the needle case, threader, and custom floss cards as you can only get them through Heaven and Earth Designs.

Fabric: 28 ct. Lugana 27x36 - $19.89
Floss: 114 skeins of DMC - $50.16
Floss Organizing Supplies: As Organized in Kit - $62.00
*Michele's Needle Threader: - $30
* The average price of one of Michele's threaders.
Needle Case: - $6.50
Needle and Notions Bag: Not included in Total
~
Total: $168.55 + Travel/Shipping
HAED Kit Cost: $107.62 including Priority 2-Day Shipping

As you can see, ordering this kit saved me $60.93 in addition to other shipping or traveling costs if I went to various locations to kit the chart up myself. That is a HUGE amount of savings, let alone the time it would have taken me to organize everything to the point I was ready to start stitching.

Speaking of time, how long did it take to get my kit? I ordered my kit on January 29th and it was shipped on February 22nd. That's 16/17 business days, and currently the website lists ~21 to 28 business days. Not bad at all, especially as I ordered my kit while the rush was on for A Stitch in Time.

Will I order a kit from Heaven and Earth Designs in the future? Absolutely! The time and cost savings alone are worth ordering, let alone how much effort the staff at Heaven and Earth Designs puts into building their kits. When I opened my kit I felt like I was a little kid again at Christmas time and I'd just opened the gift I'd begged and begged for. It really was a magical experience.

  1. Do your calculations take into account that you don't receive full skeins from HAED?

    1. Great question!
For this chart I did not as 90%+ of the 114 skeins are used in their entirety.

  2. Looks lovely! Such nice packaging and super convenient to have it already on the nice floss cards. I would worry a little bit about the floss getting tangled, but that's probably just a case of taking care of it properly. Though I don't think your savings estimate is really showing the full picture. With a JoAnn's coupon for example, I could kit up Misty Melody (one at the top of my wishlist) for $55 to $60 on 28 count Lugana but the HAED kit is $119. So I think the most important factor is how much you value not having to organize the floss yourself. Outside the states, where DMC floss is more expensive, there could likely be some better savings but then there's the risk of customs being charged, which gets expensive.

    1. Also, I don't see how the kit could have been $107 with the needle threader and priority shipping. I see this kit listed at $92 before shipping without any extras. Did you get the threader and shipping upgrade for free?

    2. I did not estimate for coupons due to them not always being available. I also pulled my pricing from the least expensive source I could find. With coupons however I am sure you could save even more if you have a location for supplies close to you :)

The threader is included in the kit price, it is not extra. The shipping is Priority automatically.

    3. She specifically said her prices came from 123 stitch which doesn't allow for coupons.

    4. In the states, being able to shop at JoAnn's with a coupon is very likely an option for most people, not everyone thought of course. With 123stitch.com only, the Misty Melody supplies I want, with shipping and handling, comes to $81. So that's still a $40+ savings on that kit to buy my own and do the work myself (not sure of the shipping on the kit, but probably adds another $10?).

I don't use a needle threader, though the one Amanda received as an extra bonus gift is lovely. So for me, in the US, if I couldn't get to JoAnn's with a coupon, it's still a consideration of whether I want to pay $40 to $50 for someone else to organize the floss and present it in a lovely box. If I had the extra money, I'd love to do that. I just still don't think it's quite right to say the kits present an outright savings for most people in the US.

    5. I'm sorry I'm not sure how to edit my comment. I see a confusing typo. I should have written "not everyone though of course" not "thought".

Also I really don't want to sound negative! I think the kits are gorgeous, and I'm a bit jealous. ;)

  3. Thank you. So lovely to see a kit and a price comparison. As someone living abroad I do not receive coupons for certain shops and pay more for DMC than is normally charged in the U.S.

The decision comes down to whether a person prefers to pay to be able to "stitch out of the box" or is happy to organise everything for themselves.

I think the kits look like a marvellous gift, either for oneself or to be given by a loved one.

    Your pattern choice is wonderful.

  4. After purchasing and organizing the floss for an 89 floss project,I can not imagine purchasing and organizing for a 240+ floss project. It would take me many hours to do this plus I wouldn't have the symbols with each floss color to double make sure they are correct. I would much rather do the fun stuff like stitching.

  5. Thank you for your input on the kit pricing difference. It gives me great thought. I do have Joanne's coupons and they are online for everyone to use. However, time is money. With 240 skeins to organize, that would be hours as Nolene stated. The price for receiving and and stitching right away is worth it. Maybe not for every design, however - just the big ones. :)

  7. I ordered my kit plus some extra supplies (like the wooden bobbins and a beautiful stone needle minder) on Jan 17, 2019. After emailing them a couple of times, I finally received a package in the mail - not a beautiful box but an envelope stuffed full of the supplies - in March. It took close to 6 weeks. They forgot the $36 needle minder and the wooden bobbins. So, I emailed again and was told they were both in the mail. I received only the needle minder and have had to email yet again one more time about the bobbins. They told me they had the flu in November and then the holidays came - which I understand and don't have a problem with. I just wish that they had mailed my order in its entirety and not in pieces that I feel like I've had to beg for. I'm frustrated. A box would also have been nice, but that may have been an option that I didn't choose. It's been too long for me to remember....
